Meningitis B

There has been a recent death at Bath Spa University. Additionally, a local Surrey school had a near death experience with a student, which is a suspected case of Meningitis B. As part of our wider health vaccine service Global Health we stock meningitis B vaccines for those not covered by NHS vaccination services.

Meningitis B  is a serious infection which causes the membranes lining the brain and spinal cord (meninges) to become inflamed.

Who is at risk?

Infants and young are most commonly at risk. The next most vulnerable group are teenagers and young adults because of increased social mixing, which leads to increased spreading of the bacteria.

Vaccine is available. The NHS have recently introduced the vaccines to babies as part of their routine childhood vaccination programme.

But there is no catch up programme for older children and young adults. Our clinicians can offer more information and advice.
